Time Constant Calculator

This tool calculates the product of resistance and capacitance values, known as the RC time constant. This figure — which occurs in the equation describing the charging or discharging of a capacitor through a resistor — represents the time required for the voltage present across the capacitor to reach approximately 63.2% of its final value after a change in voltage is applied to such a circuit. The total energy stored in a capacitor charged to a specified voltage is also calculated.

How to Calculate Time Constant:

Time constant () can be determined from the values of load resistance (R) and capacitance (C). Energy stored on a capacitor (E) can be determined by giving two inputs: voltage (V) and capacitance.

Energy Stored = Voltage2 x Capacitance / 2

Time Constant = Resistance x Capacitance
